The CHHA-Young Adult Network Welcomes Curtis Les as New President

Curtis Les was born and raised in beautiful Chilliwack, BC. Curtis had meningitis when he was 22 months old which resulted in a severe to profound hearing loss. He went to preschool at the BC Family Hearing Resource Centre and then attended Timothy Christian School in Chilliwack as a mainstreamed student until graduating in 2002. Curtis then completed post-secondary education at the University of the Fraser Valley, graduating in 2007 with a degree in computer information systems. He is currently employed as an onsite computer and network specialist for Accenture. Curtis has been involved with the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association since his parents helped to start the CHHA BC Parents’ Branch and has made many friends and memories with CHHA. Curtis currently lives in Vancouver where he enjoys skiing, golf, reading, and movies.

CHHA Announces Appointment of New National Board Member from BC

The CHHA National Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has appointed Michael Currie to the board, in accordance with a recommendation by the CHHA National Standing Committee on Nominations, chaired by Dr. Ruth Warick.

Born with a bilateral severe to profound hearing loss, Michael first used hearing aids and FM systems, as well as receiving support from a teacher’s assistant and 11 years of speech therapy.

Michael says, "I grew up refusing to accept the word 'no' for an answer." He was first mainstreamed in public school, and then home schooled in high school. He was active with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where he reached the highest rank possible with numerous awards.

Michael then attended university in Front Royal, Virginia, completing a bachelor of arts in philosophy. During his first university year, he lost the use of his left ear, and then the use of his right ear the following year. After graduation, he returned home to Alberta to enrol in the cochlear implant program and underwent surgery in April, 2001.

He describes his cochlear implant as being "quite successful". It has allowed him to start up his own company in real estate appraising for two years. He then became a manager for Edmonton's largest garden centre. Two years later, he left for Vancouver to work for a special project designed to help persons with disabilities in the work force.

Currently Michael works for Accenture, providing computer and network support for BC Hydro. Michael has been involved with the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association since 2001, starting in the CHHA Young Adult Network.

NEW! CHHA National Standing Committee on Awards

The CHHA National Board of Directors Appoints Gladys Nielsen, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, as Chair of the Newly Established CHHA National Standing Committee on Awards

On page 27 of the previous issue of Listen, a list was provided of the currently active CHHA National Working Groups. The Board of Directors has recently established a new working group, the CHHA NATIONAL STANDING COMMITTEE ON AWARDS.

Its purpose is to provide advice to the National Board of Directors on nominations for national awards.

Le Réseau des jeunes adultes de l’AMEC accueille son nouveau président, Curtis Les

Curtis Les est né et a grandi dans la très belle ville de Chilliwack, C.-B. Alors qu’il avait 22 mois,  Curtis a eut une méningite qui a causé une déficience auditive de grave à profonde. Il a fréquenté l’école préprimaire au BC Family Hearing Resource Centre puis la Timothy Christian School à Chilliwack comme étudiant du cycle d’enseignement ordinaire jusqu’à l’obtention du diplôme en  2002. Curtis a ensuite terminé ses études postsecondaires à l’Université de Fraser Valley où, en 2007, il a obtenu un diplôme avec un grade en systèmes informatiques. Curtis a participé à l’Association des malentendants canadiens depuis que ses parents ont contribué au lancement du secteur de l’AMEC de la C.-B., et il y a forgé de nombreuses amitiés et en a conservé de nombreux souvenirs. Curtis vit actuellement à Vancouver où il apprécie divers passe-temps comme le ski, le golf, la lecture et le cinéma.

L’AMEC annonce la nomination d’un nouveau membre du conseil d’administration originaire de la C.-B.

Le conseil d’administration national de l’AMEC est heureux d’annoncer qu’il a nommé Michael Currie au conseil, conformément à une recommandation du Comité permanent national de l’AMEC sur les candidatures présidé par Dr Ruth Warick.

Né avec une déficience auditive bilatérale grave à profonde, Michael a initialement utilisé des appareils auditifs et des systèmes MF et il a obtenu le soutien d’un aide-enseignant et a suivi une thérapie en orthophonie pendant 11 ans.

Michael déclare, « J’ai grandi en refusant le mot « non » comme réponse  ». Il a d’abord été étudiant du cycle d’enseignement ordinaire à l’école publique puis étudiant instruit à domicile par les parents au niveau secondaire. Il a été membre actif des Cadets de l’Aviation royale du Canada où il a atteint le plus haut rang possible et remporté de nombreux prix.

Michael a ensuite fréquenté l’université à Front Royal, Virginie, où il a obtenu un baccalauréat ès lettres en philosophie. Durant sa première année à l’université, il a perdu l’usage de l’oreille gauche, puis de l’oreille droite l’année suivante. Après la collation des diplômes, il est retourné en Alberta pour s’inscrire au programme d’implantation cochléaire et a été opéré en avril 2001.

Il qualifie son implantation cochléaire de « grande réussite ». Elle lui a permis de démarrer sa propre entreprise en évaluation immobilière qu’il a dirigée pendant deux ans. Il est ensuite devenu gérant du plus grand centre de jardinage d’Edmonton. Deux ans plus tard, il est parti à Vancouver pour travailler à un projet spécial conçu pour aider les membres handicapés de la population active.

Michael travaille actuellement pour Accenture en apportant à BC Hydro un soutien en matière d’informatique et de réseau. Michael fait partie de l’Association des malentendants canadiens depuis 2001où il a commencé comme membre du Réseau de jeunes adultes de l’AMEC.

NOUVEAU! Comité permanent national sur les prix de l’AMEC

Le conseil d’administration national de l’AMEC nomme Gladys Nielsen, de Winnipeg au Manitoba, présidente du Comité permanent national sur les prix de l’AMEC nouvellement créé

La page 29 du numéro précédent d'Écoute présentait un inventaire des groupes de travail actifs à l'AMEC nationale.  Le conseil d'administration a récemment fondé un nouveau groupe, le COMITÉ PERMANENT NATIONAL SUR LES PRIX.  Son mandat est de fournir au conseil d'administration des conseils et des recommandations sur les mises en candidature pour les prix nationaux.
