Wavelength Magazine Editorial Guidelines / Instructions for Authors General Guidelines
Wavelength magazine is the official publication of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials of Canada Inc. It is published under contract by AJPI Inc., a publishing firm located in Dundas, Ontario. APCO Canada manages the editorial content of the magazine via a standing committee and an in-situate editor-in-chief who reports to the board of directors through a designated liaison. AJPI Inc. provides a managing editor to oversee the publication.
An editorial board made up of public safety communications representatives is maintained and has the responsibility to accept editorial material submissions, annually review editorial guidelines and liaise with the editor-in-chief.
Wavelength magazine publishes articles and reports that cover issues relevant to the field of public safety communications, as generically approved by APCO Canada and as delineated within Appendix A (below).
Wavelength magazine considers original articles, book reviews, letters to the editor, etc. All submitted articles will be considered for publication; however, the editor and the publisher reserve the right to reject unsuitable material.
Authors must disclose any commercial interest in any article submitted as well as the source of any support used to create content.
Authors are required to submit a short biographical paragraph and a short abstract with each article.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and for ensuring the accuracy of all the information included in the article(s) submitted.
The editors and publisher reserve the right to edit manuscripts for clarity and length and to ensure conformity with Wavelength’s style.
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts should be double-spaced and optimally no longer than 1,500 words.
Manuscripts over 1,500 words may be accepted and may be considered for publication over two or more issues.
All manuscripts must be submitted electronically in a standard text form, that is, Word, Word Perfect, TST, or RTF.
Tables, Illustrations, and Photographs
Tables, figures, charts, boxes, and equations should be submitted as a separate file, not embedded in the text, and should contain a legend at the top of each submission.
All print-ready photos are to be submitted separately in an acceptable electronic format at a minimum of 300 dpi. Acceptable formats include EPS, TIF, or high-resolution JPG.
References
Authors should use the Harvard system for referencing in their papers, (i.e., Jones, 1995, p.4) rather than using footnotes.
References will be cited at the end of the paper. A sample layout for references is as follows:
Book:
Jones, L. R., 1995, The Firefighters Concern, Blackwell, London.
Source:
Jones, L.R., 1997, Hazard Management in the Fire Service, The Australian Journal of Fire.
Permissions
Written permission must be obtained by the author to reproduce copyrighted material; this includes tables, figures, and quoted text that exceeds 150 words.
Signed release forms are required for photographs of identifiable persons.
A copy of all permissions and release forms must accompany the manuscript.
Please submit manuscripts to your regional associate editor, the editor-in-chief or the managing editor.
Special Terms for Vendor-Authored Articles and Columns
Vendor-authors have a responsibility to write editorial submissions with an end-user bias and should not offer any article or column for submission based solely upon the commercial properties of any given product where the optics may be that in fact a commercial entity is the only focus of the material, unless otherwise authorized by the editor and publisher. Such material may be considered advertising and may be carried as such within the periodical, post any required funding arrangements with the publisher.
The editors and publisher reserve the right to edit vendor-supplied manuscripts for clarity and length and to ensure conformity with Wavelength’s style. All submitted articles will be considered for publication; however, the editor and publisher reserve the right to reject unsuitable material. All other general guidelines, manuscript preparations and permissions as outlined herein are applicable to vendor-supplied manuscripts.
